一塊蛋糕」代表很簡單，但你知道「肩膀上的木片」代表什麼意思嗎？還在 “making shots in the dark” 嗎？聽不懂 “have a blank slate” 是什麼意思嗎？

1. a chip on one’s shoulder

一個肩膀上的木片？是輕微的壓力嗎？其實不是喔！這個俚語是形容那些因為自卑而愛找人麻煩、挑釁他人的人。

Peter, stop being a chip on my shoulder. Just take care of your own work.（彼得，你就管好你份內的工作，少找我麻煩了。）

2. a couch potato

一個沙發上的馬鈴薯？這兩個聽起來毫無關聯性的東西，其實是因為美國人喜歡賴在沙發上偷閒，就像是個馬鈴薯一樣，一動也不動地躺在上面，因此後來被形容成在沙發上看電視、配零食耍廢的一種人。

When weekend is here, I become a couch potato along with my dog.（每到週末，我都會跟我的狗待在沙發上一整天。）

※補充：
mouse potato 專指花很多時間在電腦上的懶鬼
small potato 指沒什麼用處的小東西
hot potato 燙手山芋

3. a short fuse

一條短的引線，直覺來說就是容易快速引爆的引線，後來引申為形容一個人的脾氣不好。

Jason is a short fuse. So be careful when you speak with him.（Jason 的脾氣不太好，所以跟他講話的時候要小心一點。）

4. a social butterfly

跟中文一樣，一隻社交的蝴蝶，就是在形容那些善於交際、社交的人。

Shelly is such a social butterfly. She became friends with more than 100 people in the party yesterday!（Shelly 是那麼的善於社交，她在昨天的派對就新認識了一百個人！）

5. a clean slate

一塊乾淨的黑板，引申為一個事件的新開始。

It’s a clean slate to John after changing to a new company.（對於 John 來說換到一間新公司就像是新的開始一樣。）

6. a bone to pick

一根可挑的骨頭，形容一些爭議或是可挑惕的缺點。

The article Ashley wrote is so perfect that there’s no bone to pick.（Ashley 所寫的文章完美到無可挑剔。）

7. a cake walk

走去吃蛋糕，形容就像走去吃蛋糕這件事一樣容易的事情。

For me, giving a speech in front of a thousand people is a cake walk.（對我來說，要在一千人面前演講易如反掌。）

8. a pain in the neck

脖子痛又代表什麼意思呢？大家可以想像落枕是多麽痛苦的事情，因此這句引申芒刺在背燙手山竽、如鯁在喉、難搞的人或是事情。

Negotiating with customers is a pain in the neck for Betty.（對 Betty 來說，要跟客戶協商是一件難搞的事情。）

※補充：

一些比較不正式的用法，例如： a pain in the ass / butt （真的有人這樣用喔）

9. a shot in the dark

在黑夜裡的射擊，就在形容一個人盲目臆測、瞎猜。

Guessing what the customers need without a proper market survey is like a shot in the dark.（在不做正確的市場調查的情況下就盲目臆測顧客的需求，簡直猶如亂槍打鳥。）

10. a slap in the face

在臉上挨了一耳光，形容在公眾面前被羞辱、或是當頭棒喝的意思。

He got a slap in the face in front of all his classmates.（他在所有同學面前被公然羞辱。）

11. ants in one’s pants

褲子裡的螞蟻，形容一件事情非常急迫，令人坐立難安。

He is anxious that he won’t be able to turn in the paper before deadline and feels like he’s got ants in his pants.（他因為害怕不能在死線前將報告交出而感到坐立不安。）
